A national gathering in Michigan
More than 1,200 people gathered in Kentwood, Michigan, on May 24, 2026, for the Kwibuka 32 U.S. National Commemoration marking the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The Rwandan Community in Michigan hosted the gathering in partnership with Ibuka and US-RCA at Kentwood Community Church. Guided by the theme Remember, Unite, Renew, the day brought together survivors, young people, scholars, faith leaders, elected officials, and supporters from across the United States and beyond.
Remembering with truth and dignity
The program made room for prayer, testimony, musical tribute, reflection, and remembrance. Ibuka USA’s recap describes a gathering rooted in honoring those who were lost while recognizing the enduring strength of survivors and their families.
A survivor testimony invited the audience to confront the human cost of the genocide against the Tutsi and the continuing importance of preserving truth. The day also emphasized the responsibility of communities to resist misinformation and genocide denial.
Learning across generations
Youth participation was central to the commemoration. Young people took part in the program, reflecting the shared responsibility of carrying memory forward with care, knowledge, and compassion.
A panel conversation considered healing, justice, intergenerational memory, and the dangers of hate in public and digital spaces. Together, these moments connected remembrance with the work of educating, listening, and building a more humane future.
Recognition, solidarity, and renewal
The commemoration also included recognition from Michigan and local leaders, including proclamations from the State of Michigan and the cities of Kentwood and Grand Rapids. For survivors and families, these acts of public recognition affirm that their history and dignity are seen.
As the program closed, the gathering returned to its shared commitment: remembrance that honors the past, unity that sustains community, and renewal that keeps hope and responsibility alive for future generations.
